Bányász cave

The Bányász (Miner) cave is the deepest cave of Hungary since 2014. The entrace of the cave is at the Bükk plateau.

It was discovered in 1964 by excavating the 24 meters deep entrance shaft. The cave was said to be 130 meters deep, but it was overestimated: if fact the cave was only 87 meters deep.

Currently the cave is a site of explorations. Thanks to the explorations of the last years, which were leaded by Sűrű Péter and Rántó András it has become the deepest cave of Hungary. At the moment it is 275 meters deep, but the fall between the entrance and the Szinva spring (where the cave leads the water) is 400 meters.
